Rum & Sargassum Inc won a €300,000 HIT RESET Grant towards scaling up Sargassum seaweed-based biogas production in their Barbados-based commercialisation activity.

HIT RESET is the Harnessing Innovative Technologies to Support Resilient Settlements on the Coastal Zones of the Caribbean (HIT RESET) project. It aims to enhance the capacity of government entities, coastal development agencies and coastal communities to identify existing vulnerabilities, anticipate impacts, plan mitigation and implement adaptation measures, allowing coastal settlements to become more climate-resilient.

Rum & Sargassum Inc applied to the HIT RESET Caribbean program for the development of an app that enables data-driven prediction of arriving Sargassum biomass content, in order to support resilience in coastal communities’ responses to massive Sargassum seaweed influx in Barbados.

HIT RESET Caribbean is co-funded by the African, Caribbean and Pacific Innovation Fund, and the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States Research and Innovation Programme, a programme implemented by the OACPS with the financial contribution of the European Union.

In 2022, Rum & Sargassum also received the USD 10,000 prize for the Venture for ClimateTech Global Innovation Challenge.

The startup is also the recipient of a USD 100,000 seed grant from Blue Chip Foundation for the  “Best Solution” at the 2019 United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network Global Solutions Forum.
