Rum and Sargassum’s ongoing research was highlighted as part of a novel event aiming to re-imagine development for the 21st century in response to today’s complex, rapidly changing challenges.
Titled “Blue Lab Live,” the event marked UNDP Barbados & the Eastern Caribbean’s official launch of its Blue Economy Accelerator Lab, which is focused on boosting emerging grassroots innovations through innovative finance, biotechnology, waste management and renewable energy.
Rum and Sargassum’s Dr. Legena Henry, Renewable Energy Lecturer at The University of the West Indies (UWI), Cave Hill Campus, Barbados and Dr. Nikolai Holder, a research scientist in the Department of Biological and Chemical Sciences at UWI Cave Hill, displayed how bio-methanation is produced by converting green waste through a process called anaerobic digestion.
The Blue Lab initiative is part of UNDP’s Global Accelerator Labs, which is the world’s largest and fastest learning network around development challenges, supported financially by the Qatar Development Fund and the German Development Cooperation.
