Rum and Sargassum’s alternative automotive energy solution was featured at the recent Commonwealth Science Conference hosted by The University of the West Indies (UWI) and the Royal Society.
The startup is a spinoff from a Renewable Energy Lab at UWI Cave Hill Campus, Barbados. Its commercial product is a renewable compressed natural gas (RNG) produced using low-cost and locally sourced rum industry wastewater, Sargassum seaweed and Barbados Blackbelly sheep manure.
On February 8, CEO and Founder Dr Legena Henry, a Renewable Energy Lecturer at UWI Cave Hill, presented aspects of the company’s ongoing work, under the Energy Systems stream of the meeting.
The meeting followed on from the 2021 virtual Commonwealth Science Conference (CSC). Organizers aimed to build on the scientific ties formed at the 2021 CSC, to provide opportunities to continue discussions on the thematic areas and critical global challenges explored, and to equip delegates with the tools and experience required to bring their research findings to the heart of policy making.
The Royal Society is a fellowship of scientists, which promotes the advancement of science and its use for the benefit of humanity and the good of the planet.
